Pro technicians know that brake noise doesn’t necessarily mean the brake pads need replacing. Brakes can squeak if they are hot, or when driving in cold or wet weather.
And brake-pad material can be a factor, too. Metallic brake pads are usually more noisy than ceramic ones. And sometimes it’s not even the brake pads that are making the noise.
For the auto shop, brake-pad noise can lead to comebacks, even when the pads are perfectly fine. This video, aimed at pro technicians, has Andrew Markel briefly explaining how some brake noise is generated and how technicians can shift the noise outside of the range of human hearing.
